Wolves AC Duo to be Honoured by Athletics Alberta

Mirelle Martens and Bill Corcoran earned 2014 Athletics Alberta awards. Martens was named Junior Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Year, while Corcoran captured the Volunteer of the Year.

Wolves AC athlete Mirelle Martens and coach Bill Corcoran will receive provincial awards this Friday at the  Athletics Alberta Awards Banquet in Edmonton.

Martens earned the 2014 Junior Women’s Cross Country Runner of the year award. This fall, the 19 year old GPRC student captured both the ACAC and CCAA XC Individual Running titles.  In November,  she placed third in the junior women’s race at the Athletics Canada National Cross Country Running Championships and qualified for the 2015 national team.  She will compete in the Pan Am Cross Country Running Championships in Colombia later this month and the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in China in March.

Corcoran, coach and president of the Wolves Athletics Club, is being honored as the 2014 Volunteer of the Year for his work as a track & field and x-country running organizer.  In July, he coached the Alberta Summer Games NW Zone Track Team for the seventh time.  Corcoran is the founder and meet director for both the Peace Country Classic Track Meet and Wolves Cross Country Running Series.  He also serves as the CCAA National Convenor for cross country running.

The Athletics Alberta Awards Banquet takes place Friday, Feb.13 at the Delta Edmonton South Hotel and Convention Centre.

Record Setting Relay Win for Wolves Women at Nike Indoor Challenge

Wolves Women Indoor Track team accumulated 1 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze medal at the Nike Indoor Challenge in Edmonton on Saturday.

A dramatic, record setting,  come-from-behind win in the women’s 4 x 400m relay highlighted a good day for the Wolves Indoor Track team in Edmonton on Saturday at the Nike Indoor Challenge.

The quartet of Jackie Benning, Mirelle Martens, Kirstin Manz, and Jamie Wigmore established a new ACAC record in the 4 x 400m, stopping the clock in 4:16, four seconds better than the 2014 standard set by MacEwan University.  The Wolves crew trailed Lethbridge College for the first three legs, before Wigmore made a dramatic move over the last 100m to seal the victory.  Lethbridge also bettered the previous record, finishing 2 seconds behind the Wolves in 4:18.

The Wolves women also had three other podium finishes.  Wigmore and Benning went second and third in the 1500m, recording times of 4:48 and 4:54 respectively.  Martens established a new personal record time in the 3000m (10:10) while finishing second.

Wolves Athletics Club athlete Jessica Baraskewich won the 1000m, recording a time of 3:05.

Wolves Fare Well Against University Competition at 2015 Golden Bear Open

Jackie Benning set new school records in the 1000m (3:03) and 600m (1:42) at the 2015 Golden Bear Open. Her records, however, were short lived as team mate Jamie Wigmore topped both marks in subsequent heats going 2:59 and 1:37 for the same distances.

The GPRC Wolves Indoor Track team travelled to Edmonton this weekend to take on five Canada West schools plus ACAC rivals MacEwan University and Concordia in the 2015 Golden Bear Open at the University of Alberta.  The team fared well against the university-level competition, establishing 3 new school records and 13 PRs.

Mirelle Martens had the best performances, placing 3rd in the Varsity 3000m (10:22) and sixth in the Varsity 1500m (4:44).  Both times were personal bests for Martens, and the 1500m was a new school record.  Jamie Wigmore also recorded a sixth place finish in the Varsity Women’s 600m (1:37). Wigmore’s 600m time was a new school record.  She also established a new all time best GPRC time in the 1000m, stopping the clock at 2:59.

Former Wolves athlete Joren Manz, now running for the University of Alberta, placed 8th in the Varsity Men’s 600m (1:21).

800m record takes a beating at 2015 Rick Scott Open

A quartet of local ladies re-wrote the record book at the 4th Annual Rick Scott Open Track Meet at the Crosslink Sportsplex in Clairmont on Saturday.

Jamie Wigmore took 6 seconds off of her own 2013 meet record in the women’s 800m, stopping the clock in 2:26.3.  Jessica Baraskewich (2:30.5) and Jackie Benning (2:31.9) were also under the previous standard in the women’s 800m.

Kirsten Manz also broke a meet record , the women’s 300m, with her winning time of 50.4.

Brandon Wladyko (800m) and Ian Keefe (300m) were the men’s victors in Saturday’s events.

The Rick Scott Open was the opening competition for the GPRC Wolves Indoor Track team.  The local tracksters next see action in two weeks time when they contest the Golden Bear Open Track Meet in Edmonton.

Also on Saturday …

Former Wolves athlete Joren Manz, now competing for the University of Alberta, established a personal record (PR) time of 1:22 and finished third in the 600m at that Quad Dual Meet in Saskatoon.

 #2 – Wiggie’s Wonderful Winter

Wiggie’s dramatic come-from-behind win in the 2014 ACAC Indoor 400m was jaw droppingly awesome!

With a silver medal at ACAC’s and a 5th place finish at the 2013 CCAA XC Running Championships , Jamie Wigmore established herself as one of the top college runners in Alberta.  By the end of the 2014 indoor track season, she left no doubt that she was THE TOP women’s distance runner in the ACAC.

Wigmore had an outstanding indoor season.  She won a total of five ACAC races in distances ranging from 400m to 1500m. Wigmore established new GPRC school records in 5 distances (400, 800, 1000, 1500, and 4 x 400m relay).

At the 2014 ACAC Indoor Championships, Wigmore won 3 individual gold medals (400, 800, and 1500) and anchored the 4 x 400m relay team to a bronze.  Collectively, the Wolves women placed third in team competition.

Sanchez Hollowell also distinguished himself at the ACAC champs with a gold medal performance in the 1500m and a bronze in the 3000m.

168 athletes of all ages and abilities descended upon the Legion Track on Saturday, May 10 for the 2014 Peace Country Classic/Grande Prairie Hershey Meet.

The day produced a number of memorable performances including a provincial W40-44 record in the high jump.  Club member Nicole VanDerKaaden leaped 1.30m to set the new Alberta standard.

 

#4 – Repeat Double Win at DHT 10 km

For the second year in a row, WAC athletes took the top prizes in the Daily Herald Tribune Press Run 10 km road race.

Hayden Hollowell defended his 2013 title, winning this year’s race in 35:05, 4.5 minutes ahead of the second place runner.

With defending women’s champion Jamie Wigmore out with an injury,  Mirelle Martens stepped up to represent the mighty WAC.  In her first-ever road race, won the women’s event in just over 41 minutes.  (And a few hours later soloed a 5 minute flat 1500m for good measure … just saying.)

#5- Multiple Zone Titles for WAC High Schoolers

May 30,31 – NW Zone Track and Field Champs, Peace River

Brit and Kailey, the core of the “Baby Wolves”, raced each other a lot in 2014. Both athletes won multiple titles at the 2014 NW Zone Championships.

Mirelle Martens, Kailey Bratland, and Brittany Duvall combined for a total of 8 wins at the 2014 NW Zone Track and Field Championships in Peace River.

Martens won the Senior Girl’s 800, 1500, and 3000, Bratland topped the field in the Junior Women’s 400 and 800, and Duvall triumphed in the Junior Women’s 1500 and 3000.

In addition, the trio combined with Kelsey Bishop to win the Open Women’s 4 x 400m in a new Zone record time.

#6 – Martens Repeats in Provincial High School 3000m

Brit, Big Mir, Kailey, and Bish sporting the 2014 NW Zone “official uniform” for the 4 x 400m relay.  The quartet placed 7th in a field of 14 … not bad for two 3000m runners, a 1500 runner and a 100m/hurdler.

In June 2013, an unknown Mirelle Martens burst on to the provincial scene with a convincing win in the 3000m at the ASAA Provincial High School Track and Field Championships.  A year later, she returned to Provincials, this time as the favorite.

The 18 year old St Joe’s student did not disappoint, winning the Senior Womens 3000m title for the second year in a row.  Martens also placed second in the 1500m, which also duplicated her 2013 result in the event.

Hell froze over, pigs flew, and Rick Scott lost his signature face rug in mid June.

Fortunately, for fans of the hirsute (ya, look this one up), Beard 2.0 was re-established almost immediately.  By the end of 2014, Rick’s visage (yep, you may need to look this one up as well) was back to its normal homeostatic state.

Here’s a classic Sanchez shot from 2 years ago when he was 11 seconds slower over 1500m. You can take the boy out of Hythe, but you can’t take Hythe out of the boy.

Five years ago, a young lad from Hythe joined the mighty WAC and embarked upon his career as a mid and long distance runner.  Over time, he progressed from a pretty good local runner, to a pretty good high school runner, to a pretty good college runner, to a CIS-caliber runner for the  University of Saskatchewan.

During the spring and summer of 2014, Hayden Sanchez Hollowell set 6 PRs (yep, PRs, not PBs – this is Western Canada!) in a variety of distances from 800m to 5000m.  At provincials, he lowered his 1500m time to 4:05.59 – a full 11 seconds better than he ran in high school.

Mirelle Martens also had a successful outing at outdoor provincials.  She captured her first AA provincial title, winning the Junior Women’s 3000m in 10:31, a personal best time aka her new PR in the event.

As usual, the NW Zone team managed an 8th place finish (out of 8) at the Alberta Summer Games in Airdrie.  And also, as usual, the NW Zone team had the most fun out of all eight Zones at the Games.

For the record, the NW Zone track team had 7 podium finishes (5 silver and 2 bronze).  The NW Zone was also recognized with the Spirit of the Games Award.

#10 – Wolves Women’s XC Team Ranked #1 in the Nation

In 2014’s first CCAA XC Running National Rankings, the GPRC Wolves Women’s team was ranked second.  As things turned out, this was the “low point” of their sensational season.

On October 4, the Wolves women took on the defending national champion UBCO Heat and all of the ACAC’s best in Calgary.  By the end of that race, it was clear that the GPRC women were a force to be reckoned with.  The Wolves easily won the meet with a score of 22 points, 13 better than second place Lethbridge College.  UBCO placed third.

In the next CCAA rankings, the Wolves moved to #1 in Canada, a position they maintained for the rest of the season.

After missing the top ten by a single place in 2013, Brittany Duvall redeemed herself with a tenth place finish in the Intermediate Women’s 4 km race in the 2014 ASAA Provincial High School XC Running Championships in Okotoks.

Team mate Kailey Bratland also had a strong run, placing 13th , 20 spots better than her 2013 result.

Placing four women in the top 7, the Wolves women easily won the 2014 ACAC XC Running Championship in Ft McMurray.

Led by individual gold (Mirelle Martens) and silver (Jamie Wigmore) medalists, the GPRC women scored 16 points, 21 better than second place SAIT.

Scads of GPRC fans, including the Wolves Women’s soccer team, made the trip to Calgary on November 8 to watch Big Mir and her team mates crush the field at the CCAA XC Running Championships

With a meet record score, the Wolves Women’s XC running team captured its second national team championship at the 2014 CCAA National XC Championships in Calgary.

Mirelle Martens led the way with a convincing 31 second win for the individual gold medal.  Jamie Wigmore(4th), Jackie Benning (8th), and Amanda Patteson (11th) were the other GPRC scorers.

With 19 points, the Wolves finished 53 points ahead of second place SAIT, setting CCAA championship records for best team score and largest margin of victory.

In 2013 in her third-ever xc running race, Mirelle Martens faced the best runners of her age in the country at the  Athletics Canada National Cross Country Running Championship.  She finished 33rd.

One year later, armed with much more racing experience, Martens was ready.  Running an aggressive race where she stayed among the top five for the entire way, Martens kicked hard over the final 400m and hung on for the bronze medal.

For placing among the top 6, Martens was selected for the 2015 Junior National team which will contest the Pan Am XC Running Championships in February and World XC Running Championships in China in March.

Podium for Wolves’ Martens at National Junior XC Running Champs

Wolves runner Mirelle Martens capped off her 2014 cross-country running season in style on Saturday capturing 3rd place in the Junior Women’s (19U) 6 km race at the Athletics Canada National Cross Country Running Championships in Vancouver.

Martens got out to a quick start and ran in the lead pack of four runners for the first two laps  of the three lap race. In the final lap, winner Hannah Woodhouse of Ontario separated herself from the field, and silver medalist Jennie Baragar-Petrash from Winnipeg rallied from 8th place.  Martens dug deep in the final 400m to hold off four other runners in the battle for the bronze medal.

Martens and five other runners earned spots on the 2015 Junior National Cross Country running team.  They will represent Canada in the Pan Am Cross Country Running Championships in Columbia in February and the IAAF World Cross Country Running Championships in China in March.

In the Junior Women’s team competition, Marten’s run helped Team Alberta place second behind Team Ontario.

Four other Wolves Athletics Club runners also took part in the national meet.  Kailey Bratland and Brittany Duval ran in the Youth Women’s (17U) 4 km race finishing in 93rd and 95th places, respectively.  Jamie Wigmore was 44th in the Senior Women’s 8 km race while Hayden Hollowell was 58th in the Senior Men’s 10 km race.

Former Wolves runner Fiona Benson, now running for Trinity Western University, placed 7th in the Senior Women’s race.

Record Setting Victory for Wolves Women’s XC Running at CCAA Nationals

The GPRC Wolves Women’s Cross Country running team completed an undefeated season on Saturday with a convincing win at the 2014 CCAA National Cross Country Running Championships in Calgary.  Placing four runners in the top 11, the Wolves compiled the best women’s team score in the 13 year history of the event.

ACAC rival schools SAIT and Lethbridge College completed an Alberta sweep of the podium by placing  second and third respectively. Ontario champion Humber College was fourth.

Rookie sensation Mirelle Martens led the way for the Wolves as she has all season.  Martens took the lead from the gun and gradually pulled away from the entire field over the hilly 5 km course.  She crossed the finish line first in a time of 18:29, 31 seconds better than Victoriaville’s Jessy Lacourse, the reigning Quebec college champion.  Ontario college champion Lindsay Webster from Humber College placed third.

Close behind the leading three was Wolves runner Jamie Wigmore who ran a gutsy race finishing fourth.  Jackie Benning and Amanda Patteson kept Wigmore in sight for the entire race and were rewarded with 8th and 11th place finishes respectively.  Sisters Kristin (89th) and Karina Manz (105th) also represented the Wolves in the women’s race.

Based on their finishes, Martens and Wigmore were named First Team Tournament All Stars, while Benning and Patteson were named Second Team Tournament All Stars.

This was only the second time in history that a GPRC women’s team topped the standings at CCAA Nationals. The 2002 Wolves women were the best college team at the first CCAA meet.  Martens’ win represented the third national individual title won by a Wolves athlete in cross country running.  Kyle Reynolds took the gold in the men’s race in 2004, while Fiona Benson won the women’s event in 2010.

In the men’s 8 km race, the Wolves managed a 16th place finish.  Third year runner Riley Wallace had the best GPRC finish placing 56th, two spots better than team mate Brandon Wladyko.  Ian Keefe (83rd) and Josh Malmstem (104th) were the other Wolves finishers.

While CCAA Nationals marked the end of the cross country season for most of the Wolves runners, Martens and Wigmore still have some unfinished business. Both women will be in Vancouver at the end of the month contesting the Athletics Canada Cross Country Nationals and World Championship Team Trials.

Former Wolves standouts Fiona Benson and Hayden Hollowell were in St. John’s NL for the 2014 Canadian Interuniversity Sport Cross Country Running Nationals.  Benson placed 10th in the 6 km women’s race and was part of the silver medal winning team from Trinity Western University.  Hollowell, running for the University of Saskatchewan, placed 106th in the men’s 10 km race.

Placing four runners in the top 7, the GPRC Wolves Women’s XC Running team dominated the ACAC Championships on Saturday in Fort McMurray. The win was the team’s third in a row against ACAC competition this season.

As she’s done all year, rookie Mirelle Martens led the way for the Wolves winning the hilly 5 km race in 19:02. Team mate Jamie Wigmore captured the silver medal.  Wolves veterans Jackie Benning and Amanda Patteson placed sixth and seventh respectively.  Based on their top seven placings, all four women were named to the 2014 ACAC all conference team.

Other Wolves finishers in the women’s 5 km included sisters Kristen (29th) and Karina Manz (41st), Tamica Campbell (47th), Cierra Verduzco (48th), and Emily Whalen (49th).

SAIT placed second among the women’s teams, while Lethbridge College was third.

This was the first team championship for the Wolves women since 2004 and only the third ever.  Martens individual women’s ACAC gold medal was only the second in GPRC history.  Tara Lee Stillwell took the top prize in the 1999 ACAC race.

In the men’s 8 km race, the Wolves Men were 6th behind the winning team from Concordia University. Brandon Wladyko and Riley Wallace had top 20 finishes, placing 15th and 18th respectively.  Ian Keefe (25th), Josh Malmstem (36th), Eric Derose (41st), Gaurav Rawat (51st), Julian Camsell (58th), and North Alton (59th) were the other GPRC finishers.

Dominant Performance by X-Country Wolves Women at ACAC #4

The #2 nationally-ranked GPRC Wolves Women’s X-Country team won its second ACAC race of the season on Saturday in Calgary, ACAC #4- Pre-Nationals hosted by SAIT Polytechnic.  Placing its four scoring runners in the top ten, GPRC tallied 22 points, 13 better than second place Lethbridge College.  UBCO, the CCAA’s top-ranked women’s team, was a distant third with 53 points.

Individually,  Mirelle Martens was first amongst the college runners for the third time this season.   She recorded a time of 19:51 over the hilly 5 km course. Teammates Jamie Wigmore (4th), Jackie Benning (7th), and Amanda Patteson (10th) were the next Wolves runners to finish.  Kirsten Manz (32nd) and Tamica Campbell (46th) also completed the race.

The Wolves Men placed sixth in the men’s 8 km race, behind the winning team from UBCO.  Riley Wallace had the best GPRC placing with an 11th place finish amongst the college runners.  Other Wolves finishers included Brandon Wladyko (25th), Ian Keefe (31st), Josh Malmstem (37th), Gaurav Rawat (47th), and North Alton (55th).

The Wolves’ next ACAC meet is the Conference Championships in Fort Mc Murray on October 25.

In other cross country action on Saturday, two former Wolves contested the Sled Dog Open in Saskatoon.  Eric Martinek was the second University of Alberta runner across the line, placing 19th in the men’s 8 km race.  Hayden Hollowell, running for the University of Saskatchewan, was 31st.

Wolves Runners Dominate at ACAC #2

Led by the dynamic duo of Mirelle  Martens and Jamie  Wigmore, the GPRC Wolves women’s x-country running team topped the field at ACAC #2 hosted by Keyano College in  Ft. Mc Murray on Saturday.

Martens, for the second week in a row, led all college runners, posting a time of 18:32 on the hilly 5 km course.  Wigmore placed second in 18:58, her first sub 19 clocking. Concordia’s Mariya Jenkins, last year’s CCAA bronze medalist, placed third.

Jackie Benning and Amanda Patteson also had strong races, placing 5th and 8th respectively. Sisters Kirstin and Karina Manz recorded 12th and 20th place finishes. Wolves assistant coach Jessica Baraskewich was 3rd amongst the non college runners.

Collectively, the Wolves women scored 16 points, well ahead of second place NAIT which totalled 33.  Concordia placed third.

In the men’s race, the Wolves ended up a surprising second behind the winning team from the University of Alberta – Augustana.  Riley Wallace had the top GPRC finish: 5th place.  Other Wolves finishers included Ian Keefe (9th), Josh Malmstem (15th), and North Alton (21st.)

The XC Wolves next ACAC meet is ACAC #4 – Pre Nationals hosted by SAIT in Calgary on October 4.
