GP Hershey Meet Selected As National Co-Host

Athletics Canada has chosen Grande Prairie as one of four sites to co-host the first Hershey’s Track & Field Games Day in Canada on May 14.

Started in the late 90s, the Grande Prairie Hershey Meet is one of Alberta’s most established Hershey Meets.  Each year, about 100 kids ranging in age from 6 to 14 compete to qualify for the Provincial Hershey meet in June.  Provincial Hershey Meet winners are then eligible for selection to the North American Hershey Meet in Pennsylvania in early August.

This is the ninth year that the Grande Prairie Hershey Meet has been incorporated into the Peace Country Classic (PCC) Track and Field Meet.  This year’s PCC will also host the NW Zone Trials for the Alberta Seniors Games in Fairview in July.  A few hundred athletes of all ages, from 6 year olds to 70+, are expected to compete.

Wolves X-C Legend Tackles Boston 2011

Wolves X-C Legend THE Brady Turner toed the line today for the 115th running of the Boston Marathon.  Despite perfect conditions and a huge tailwind, Turner was unable to match strides with winner Geoffery Mutai and his world best 2:03:02 clocking.

Turner was in a hole early passing 5 km in 21 and change about 7 minutes behind the leaders.  Things unravelled rapidly from there as he hit 10 km in just over 42 minutes and then half way in 1:34.  Just when you’d think he was hitting rock bottom, he proceeded to dig deeper … so deep that further splits and his final time will not be revealed … Google it if you really need to know.

We caught up with Turner by e-mail and he offered the following analysis: “Stomach issues, didn’t have much of an appetite all wknd, forced some pasta down the night before but then felt horrible. Did a lot walking today, I was ready to be done by mile 7. Oh well what can ya do. Boston won that round but I will be back!”

In an unprecedented move, Wolves coach Bill Corcoran declined to comment.  Instead, he mumbled something about “taking the high road” and “not kicking a guy when he was down.”

At this point, the eagerly awaited Corcoran-Turner re-match over the marathon distance is on hold pending contract negotiations.  It is hoped that the two may go head-to-head in New York in 2012.

Benson represents Canada well in Trinidad and Spain

Wolves runner Fiona Benson recently completed a stellar x-country season by representing Canada in a pair of international races.

On Feb. 18, she led the Team Canada Junior Women to the team title at the 2011 NACAC Championships (North America and Caribbean)  in Port of Spain, Trinidad.  Running a smart race, Benson moved up gradually, finished fast, and ended up with the silver medal, a mere six seconds back of the American winner.  She clocked 13:59.6 for the 4 km course, two seconds ahead of the bronze medalist Maria Bernard from Calgary.

The NACAC race was a breakthrough performance for Benson.  In November she qualified for Team Canada with a 7th place finish at the National Championships; in Trinidad she was the leading Canadian.

With the team win, the Canadian Junior Women qualified for the 2011 World X-C Championships in Spain on March 20.

In Spain, the Canadians faced fierce competition from the best runners on the planet, particularly the Ethiopian and Kenyan runners.  Over the longer 6 km distance, Benson clocked 22:07 for 64th place in a field of 92 starters.  The Canadian team ran together with all 6 runners finishing within 34 seconds of each other between 51st and 72nd place.

Benson placed 5th amongst the Canadians; she also finished ahead of 3 of the 6 Americans entered in the race.
