Martinek Posts Huge Personal Best at Running Room Indoor Challenge

A small contingent of GPRC Wolves athletes opened the 2012 indoor track seasaon at the 1st Running Room Indoor Challenge Track meet on Saturday in Edmonton.

Second year student Eric Martinek posted a 9 second personal best in the 1500m, clocking a time of 4:32.90, good for 5th in the field of 22 runners.  Wolves coach Bill Corcoran placed 19th (5:00.99).

The top womens finish for the locals was a seventh place finish for the 4 x 400m team consisting Jackie Benning, Kayla Hardy, Chassity Mohan, and Calla Scott.  In the individual events, Mohan placed 7th in the 1500m, and Hardy was 8th in the 3000m. Benning and Scott competed in the 800m placing 14th and 18th respectively.

2011 AC Nationals X-C Wrap: Benson repeats 7th place

Former Wolves runner Fiona Benson battled torrential rain and mud and finished 7th in the Junior Womens race at the Athletics Canada National Cross Country Running Championships on Saturday in Vancouver.

 Benson clocked 18:59 for the 5 km course, 25 seconds behind winner Ellen Pennock from Calgary.  Benson also finished 7th at the 2010 Junior Nationals.

 A pair of younger Wolves AC runners also took part.  Kayla Hardy placed 97th in the Junior Womens race, while Hayden Hollowell finished 115th in the Junior Mens race.

Bill Corcoran (66th) and Marlene Corcoran (90th) contested the Masters 8 km race.

X-C Wolves Rocket Up the Rankings at CCAA Nationals

Going into the 2011 CCAA National Cross Country Running Championships in Kamloops on Saturday, both Wolves x-country teams were looking to significantly improve upon on their national rankings.  By the end of the event, that mission had definitely been accomplished.

The previously ranked 14th place Wolves women turned a lot of heads, ending up in 6th place.  They were led by Maddy Clough’s 20th place finish.  Clough clocked a season’s best time of 20:10 for the pancake flat 5 km course.  Team mates Kayla Hardy (39th), Amanda Patteson (42nd), and Jackie Benning (46th) followed closely.  Other Wolves finishers included Lena Farrow (52nd), Davis Alton (72nd ), Chassity Mohan (77th), Carrina Ness (101st), Erin Corcoran (102nd), Linnea Saltel (105th) and Calla Scott (107th).

With 11 finishers, the Wolves women fielded the largest team in the competition,

The race was won by last year’s runner up, Jodi Sanguin of Red Deer College.

Humber College from Toronto won the womens team competion, edging out two Alberta schools, MacEwan University and Red Deer College, for the win.

In the mens race, the Wolves placed 11th, two spots better than their 13th place ranking going into the meet.  As usual, Devin Woodland led the way with an 18th place finish.  Eric Martinek had his best race of the year, placing 45th, while rookies Duncan Farrow (57th) and Jack Carrigan (60th) also contributed strong efforts.  Rounding out the Wolves finishers were Dylan Moerike (97th), Torleif Landsgaard (100th), Bjorn Carlstad (105th) and Evan Paul (106th).

Augustana Faculty’s Andy Pohl upset Ontraio champion Clint Smith and ACAC gold medalist Peter Kayla for the mens individual championship.

The team competition featured another upset as Quebec’s Ste Foy beat out defending champion Fanshawe College.

A total of 224 athletes from across the country took part in the meet.  Champlain College from Montreal will host next year’s championship.

The CCAA meet marked the end of the x-c season for most of the Wolves; however, Kayla Hardy and high school runner Hayden Hollowell have one more meet this year.  Both athletes will contest the Athletics Canada Junior Nationals Cross Country meet in Vancouver on November 26.

X-C Notes: Former Wolves standout Fiona Benson, now running for Trinity Western University, placed 48th on Saturday in the CIS National University Championships in Quebec City.

Hollowell 6th at Provincial Junior X-C Champs

Hayden Hollowell continued his impressive season with a 6th place finish in the Junior Mens race at the Athletics Alberta Age Class Cross Country Championships in Edmonton on Saturday.

The 17 year old, Beaverlodge runner clocked a time of 31:10 for the hilly 8 km course at Goldstick Park.

Next up for Hollowell is the Athletics Canada National Cross Country Running Championships in Vancouver on November 26.

Meanwhile, the GPRC Wolves X-Country Running team is in Kamloops next Saturday for the CCAA National Cross Country Running Championships.

Woodland Captures Bronze at ACAC X-C Final

For the first time in seven seasons, a male GPRC x-country runner has made the podium at the ACAC X-Country Running Championships.

Devin Woodland surged ahead of a pack of four runners over the final few kilometers of the rolling Canmore Park course in Calgary to solidify his top-3 spot.  He clocked a time of 28:19, a minute and half behind the duo of Peter Kayla of Lethbridge College and Andy
Pohl
of Augustana Campus who placed one and two respectively.

In the team competition, the Wolves men placed 4th. Veteran Eric Martinek had the second best GPRC result, finishing 19th. Rookie runners Jack Carrigan, Duncan Farrow, and Dylan Moerke were the next GPRC runners, placing 21st, 23rd , and 43rd respectively.  Evan Paul (52nd), Torlief Lansgaard (53rd),  and Bjorn Carlstad (65th) were the other Wolves participants

MacEwan University edged out Lethbridge College for the team title.  Augustana Campus placed 3rd.

The Wolves women had a strong fourth place showing, missing the bronze medal in the team competition by a mere 3 points.   Maddy Clough led the way for GPRC with a ninth place finish.  Following Clough, were Lena Farrow (20th), Jackie Benning (22nd), Amanda Patteson (23rd)  Kaya Hardy (30th), Chassity Mohan (31st), Davis Alton (36th), Carina Ness (56th), Erin Corcoran (57th), Vanessa Besharah (63rd),  Calla
Scott
(64th), Jenna Backer (69th), Linnea Saltel (70th), Mandy Matier (71st), Hannah Tighe (75th), and Carly Upshall (81st).

Red Deer College upset the CCAA numbe-one ranked MacEwan University to win the team completion.  Host SAIT was third.

Next up for the x-c Wolves is the CCAA National Championships  on Saturday, November 12 in Kamloops.

Hollowell cracks top 25 at High School Prov X-C

Beaverlodge Regional High School’s Hayden Hollowell had the top local placing at the ASAA High School Provincial Cross Country Championships in Cypress Hills on Saturday.
The 17 year old runner placed 23rd in the Senior Mens 6 km race, recording a time of 23:37 over the difficult, hilly course.

Other NW Zone runners placing in the top 50, included Kiana COWGER from the GP Comp (39th in the Junior Womens race) , Katrina ROTTMERHUSEN from Hillside, Valleyview (42nd, Junior Womens), and Lindsay Fehr from LaCrete (27th, Senior Womens).

In the team standings,  the GP Comp placed 31st among the 4A schools.  St Joes and Beaverlodge were 29th and 31st respectively in the 3A standings.  LaCrete was the top 2A school from the Northwest, placing 10th.  Grande Prairie’s Ecole Nouvelle Frontiere was 10th among the 1A schools.

Wolves Teams 5th and 6th at Augustana Open

With two weeks to go before the ACAC Championships, the Wolves x-country running teams are rounding into top form.  Both teams had season’s best placings on Saturday in ACAC Grand Prix #5 – the Augustana Open in Camrose.

The men were again led by Devin Woodland who placed third amongst the college runners, his third ACAC podium placing this fall. Woodland clocked a time of 28:34 for the challenging 8 km course.  Rookie runners Jack Carrigan and Duncan Farrow were the next GPRC runners, placing 20th and 24th respectively in their first ACAC race.  Torlief Lansgaard (49th), Evan Paul (50th) and Bjorn Carlstad (53rd) were the other Wolves runners recording a placing.

Overall, the men placed fifth, behind the victorious Lethbridge College.

Thirteen Wolves women, the most ever entered in a ACAC race, toed the line in the womens 5 km event.  Maddy Clough led the way for GPRC with a ninth place finish.  Following Clough, were Lena Farrow (20th), Kaya Hardy (24th), Davis Alton (38th), Chassity Mohan (39th), Vanessa Besharah(44th), Carinal Ness (46th), Calla Scott (26:11), Linnea Saltel (54th), Erin Corcoran (58th), Hannah Tighe (64th), Alison Hodgins (66th), and Carly Upshall (68th).

In the team competition, the women placed 6th,

Hollowell Romps to Zone X-C Victory

Wolves Athletics Club athlete Hayden Hollowell dominated the Senior Mens race at the 2011 NW Zone Cross Country running championships in Wanham on Wednesday, October 5.  The 17 year old Beaverlodge Regional High Student covered the 6 km course in a time of 20:47, over 3 minutes ahead of the second place runner.

A number of other local athletes who’ve trained with the Wolves this fall also had some stellar results.  Cedric Labbe placed 4th in the Senior Mens race.  A trio of St Joe’s runners, Fiona Kato, Melanie Fortin, and Hailey Winnicky-Lewis, placed 5th, 6th, and 11th respectively in the Junior Womens race.

In the high school team competition, High Prairie’s EW Pratt was the top high school followed by La Crete.  The GP Comp placed third, one spot better than St Joes.

The top junior high team was also from High Prairie, St. Andrews.  They bested Montrose Junior High in second place and Eaglesham School in third.

The top 18 finishers in the various Senior High races qualified for the Northwest Zone team for the 2011 ASAA Provincial High School Cross Country Running Championships in Elkwater, AB next Saturday, Oct. 15.

Also next Saturday, the GPRC Wolves x-country team is in Camrose for the Augustana Open X-C Race and Race #7 in the 2011 Wolves X-C Series, the Dawson Creek Sneak, takes place.

Woodland Second at SAIT Open X-C

Wolves x-country standout Devin Woodland is a clearly a runner with momentum.  After a pair of wins in local races and a third place finish in ACAC Race #2 fourteen  days ago in Vermilion, the 19 year old continued his upward trajectory with a  silver medal in the College division at the SAIT Open X-C race in Calgary on  Saturday.

Woodland covered the moderately hilly 8 km course in a time of 27:21, only 12 seconds  back of the College division winner, Peter Kayla, of Lethbridge College.

In the team event, the Wolves men placed 5th in a field of 9 schools.  Other Wolves finishers included Eric Martinek (17th), Laurence MacNeil (45th), and Bjorn Carlstad (46th).

Hayden Hollowell from Beaverlodge Regional High School placed third among the high school competitors in the race.

With their top 4 runners unable to make the trip to Calgary, the Wolves women struggled a
bit, placing 8th in a field of 10 colleges in the womens 5 km race.  However, there were a number of fine individual runs including Jackie Benning(29th) and Davis Alton
(34th).  Other Wolves finishers included Chassity Mohan (36th), Vanessa Besharah (39th), Erin Corcoran (47th), Mandy Matier (51st ), Linnea Saltel (57th), and Calla
Scott (59th).

Elsewhere on Saturday, a small contingent of Wolves runners took part in the Tumbler
Ridge Ramble X-C race, event #6 in the 2011 Wolves X-C Series.   Jack Carrigan edged out teammate Duncan Farrow for the win in the Open Mens race;  Torleif Landsgaard was 4thLena Farrow crushed the womens  field, finishing nearly 4 minutes ahead of her nearest competitor over the challenging 6 km distance.

While the Wolves have an off week this coming weekend, local junior and senior high
school runners  are in action on Wednesday when they contest the ASAA NW Zone Championships near Wanham.

Local X-C Running Wrap – Sept 24, 2011

It was another busy weekend for the GPRC Wolves Cross Country Running team.

Saturday at the Bezanson Bog, race #4 in the 2011 Wolves Cross Country Running Series, GPRC runner Kayla Hardy won her third race in as many weeks.  The 18 year old defeated all other female competitors in the featured 6 km distance, covering the hilly and rooted course in 29:07.

Wolves runners swept the next three places.  Amanda Patteson placed second, ahead of Lena Farrow in third, and Assistant Coach Mallory Pinnock in fourth.

Wolves veteran Devin Woodland was victorious in the mens race, clocking 24:33 for the 6 km, 13 seconds better than Beaverlodge Regional High School’s Hayden Hollowell.  Wolves rookies Duncan Farrow and Jack Carrigan battled for the bronze medal, with Farrow outleaning Carrigan at the finish.

On Sunday, Wolves Coach Bill Corcoran and athlete Chris Ward contested the Fall Classic 10 km road race in Grande Prairie.  Corcoran recorded a third place finish in 41:20, 9 seconds and one place better than Ward.  The race was won by Grande Prairie’s Scott Goosney in 39:52, 45 seconds ahead of Leonard Scharbach.

Also of note, former Wolves runner Fiona Benson was named the Alberta Sport Development Centre – Northwest Female Athlete of the Year on Saturday night.  The award was announced at the High Performance Sport Recognition Banquet at the TEC Centre.  Benson bested fellow nominees 2010-11 CCAA Female Basketball Player of the Year Andria Carlyon and local high school volleyball standout Jaden Douvelle.

The local cross country running season continues this week on a number of fronts.  Wolves Series Race #5 goes Wednesday near Wanham and Race #6, the Tumbler Ridge Ramble, is slated for next Saturday.  Also on Saturday, The GPRC Wolves team will be in Calgary to contest ACAC Grand Prix #4, hosted by SAIT.
