Mirelle Martens 2013 ASAA Provincial Cross Country Running Champion
St. Joe’s student Mirelle Martens is the 2013 Provincial High School Senior Girls Cross Country Champion. On Saturday, Martens triumphed over 120+ runners in the Senior Girls race at the ASAA XC Running Championships in Drayton Valley. She clocked a time of 14:56 for the hilly 4 km course, 34 seconds better than runner up Alyssa Steed from Calgary.
A number of other area runners had top placings as well. In the Junior Girls 3 km race, Martens’ St. Joe’s teammate Danae Keddie placed 7th, while Eaglesham School’s Britanny Duvall placed 11th.
Bernardo Rojas from the Composite High School was the top male athlete from the area. He placed 30th in the Senior Boys race.
While the cross country running season is over for most area high school runners, Martens, Keddie, and Duvall along with several GPRC Wolves Cross Country runners will contest the Athletics Canada National Cross Country Running Championships in Vancouver on November 30.
