Silver for Wigmore at ACAC XC Provincials

Jamie Wigmore surprised many by placing second at the 2013 ACAC XC Running Championships in Edmonton on Saturday

Second-year Wolves runner Jamie Wigmore ran a season’s best performance on Saturday, placing second among the women at the  ACAC Cross Country Running Championships in Edmonton.

Ranked 5th going into the race, Wigmore was leaned out for the win by 2012 silver medalist Vanessa Trofimenkoff of MacEwan University.  Both runners were given identical times of 19:14 for the rolling 5 km course.  Trofimenkoff’s team mate Lesley Koopman placed third, 15 seconds behind the leading duo.

Wigmore’s strong performance propelled the Wolves women to third place in the team standings, one spot better than their pre-championship ranking.  SAIT won the team championship; Lethbridge College placed second.

Individually, the other Wolves women placed as follows: Kayla Hardy (14th), Amanda Patteson (15th), Christie Shepherd (22nd), Kirsten Manz (28th), Tori Furstenwerth (36th), Ashley Camsell (50th), Catherine Geary (54th), Emily Whalen (60th), Calla Scott (61st), Filiz Ozgur (66th), Caryn Clark (69th) and, Amy Alzenburger (83rd).

The Wolves men also had a good day led by Hayden Hollowell who placed 5th and Riley Wallace, who finished 7th.  Collectively, the GPRC men placed fourth, equivalent to their pre-championships ranking.

Edwin Kaitnay from Lethbridge captured the gold medal in a time of 26:23 for the 8 km course, 47 seconds ahead of former Wolves runner Devin Woodland, who now represents Red Deer College.   The MacEwan University men won the team title, ahead of SAIT and Lethbridge College.

The other Wolves men competitors were Dylan Zambolinni (22nd), Ian Keefe (29th), Vaughn Marillier (30th), Nick Whalen (61st), Julain Camsell (63rd), and Rawat Gaurav (66th).

Based on their top 7 finishes, Wigmore, Hollowell, and Wallace were named ACAC All Conference runners for 2013.  In addition, Wigmore was further honoured by being designated as one of 3 All Canadians from the ACAC for this season,.

While the season is over for some of the Wolves runners, the top 8 women and top 5 men will be travelling to Toronto in two weeks for the 2013 CCAA Cross Country Running Championships hosted by Humber College.
