Close Finish at DGLW Trail Half Marathon

Grande Prairie’s Ladon Dunbar made a bold move in the final 3 kms to break away from a 4-man pack and win the featured 21 km distance at the Don’t Get Lost in the Woods Trail Races at the Wapiti Nordic Trails on Sunday.

Dunbar covered the distance in 1:31:24, 3 seconds ahead of Tanner BroadbentScott Goosney placed third.  Other winners included

Womens 21 km  Lisa Lauzon   1:49:49

Mens 10 km Josh Malmstem   48:05

Womens 10 km   Julie Forbes   58:52

Boys 3 km   JP Puszka   12:44

Girls 3 km  Megan Hopkins  15:06

Wolves Runners 1-2 at Fairview Road Race

Wolves runners Eric Martinek and Hayden Hollowell topped the field in the featured 11 km distance at the inagural Summer’s End Road Race in Fairview on Saturday.

Martinek took an early lead, steadily distancing himself from the pursuing pack.  He stopped the  clock at 39:19, 2 1/2 minutes ahead of teammate Hollowell.

Four other Wolves Athletics Club members also had podium finishes.  Marlene Corcoran won the womens 11 km distance, while 15 year old Danae Keddie was the top women in the womens 5.5 km.  Bronze medals in the 5.5 km distance were earned by Linnea Saltel and Zach Malmsten.

The Summer’s End Road Race was Race #1 in the 2012 Wolves X-C Running Series.  Race #2, the Don’t Get Lost in the Woods Trail Races, go this Sunday at the Wapiti Nordic Trails.  the Online Registration deadline is on Friday.

Early Kickoff for Wolves X-C Series

 

Start of the Steve Burgess Memorial – Race #3 in the Wolves Series

The 2012 Wolves X-C Running Series hits the road this weekend with the Summer’s End Road Race in Fairview.

The Fairview event, a 5 and 10 km road race, is new edition to this year’s Wolves Series. The action gets underway at 9 a.m. at the Cummings Lake Trails with the Kid’s races – you can register onsite on race day.

Following this week, eight more Wolves Series races will take place at venues across the Peace this fall.  The Series concludes this year with Sorkenville Massacre – a X-C Relay near Tee Pee Creek.

Two Golds for Zone 8 ASG Track Team

Gold medals from Fox Creek’s Kit Liske and Peace River’s Rylee Armstrong highlighted the Zone 8 Athletics Team’s showing at the Alberta Summer Games in Lethbridge last weekend.

Liske, the reigning Western Canadian U15 Javelin champion, threw 42m on his best toss, to win easily by 5m.  Armstrong improved upon her 2nd place showing earlier this year at the Alberta High School Championships by jumping 1.65m for the win in U17 high jump.

Grande Praire’s Tyler Leicht and Evan Tordiff both achieved silver medals, Leicht in the U17 boys 3000m (10:07) and Tordiff in the U17 boys javelin (45m).

Armstrong (U 17 triple jump) and Tordiff (U17 shot put) both had a second visit to the podium capturing bronze medals.  Other bronze medals were awarded to High Level’s Christian Lambert (U15 High Jump), LaCrete’s Jaleny Klassen (U17 Discus), Donnelly’s Zach Chowace (U17 Octathlon), and Berwyn’s Cassandra Ellery (U17 Javelin.)

A total of 39 athletes represented Zone 8 Peace Country in track and field in 68 different events.  In the team standing, Zone 8 finished in eighth place.

Manz Golden in Junior Provincial 800m

Half a dozen local athletes took part in the Sherwood Park Track Classic on Saturday and Sunday, amassing a number of podium finishes.

Wolves Athletics Club runners Joren Manz and Hayden Hollowell competed in the Junior (U 19) category which was designated as the 2012 Provincial Championship.  On Saturday, Manz recorded a personal best time of 50.2 in the 400m and captured the silver medal.  Sunday, was even better when Manz won the 800m with a time of 2:00.5.

Hollowell had a pair of 7th place finishes recording times of 4:20 in the 1500m and 17:02 in the 5000m.

In the Youth (U17) category, Taryn Byrne from Nampa, had three gold medals, winning the 100m Hurdles, Javelin, and Discus.

In the Midget (U15) category, Jarod Larson had a gold (2000m) and silver (1200m) medal.  Luis BlaisVentura, finished second in the Shot Put and third in the 2000m

Kelsy Wudevich narrowly missed the podium in the Bantam (U13) category with a pair of 4th place finishes in the High Jump and 600m.

Wudevich, Byrne, Larson, and Blais-Ventura will compete with the Zone 8 Peace Country Team in the Alberta Summer Games  in Lethbridge on July 27 and 28.

Also this past weekend, former Wolves athlete Fiona Benson, won the 800m and finished 2nd in the 1500m, just behind 2012 Olympian Jessica Smith,  at the BC Provincial Championships in Coquitlam, B.C.

June Track and Field Wrap

Hayden Hollowell had a great meet at the 2012 Alberta High School Provincials

June was a busy month for Wolves Athletics Club members:

  1. At the Alberta High School Provincial Championships on June 1 and 2, Joren Manz captured the bronze in the Senior Mens 800m.  Joren recorded his first sub 2 800m, stopping the clock in 1:59.26. Joren also placed 5th in the 400m (51.17, 50.86 in heats ) and ran a leg on the 9th place NW Zone 4 x 400m team (3:44.40)

Hayden “Sanchez” Hollowell also had a notable meet, highlighted by a 4th place and new personal best in the Senior Mens 1500m (4:16.92).  Sanchez also recorded a 6th place in the 800m (2:06.67 and a 7th place in 3000m (9:37.23).  Considering his previous best placing at a provincial high school’s was 9th, Sanchez ended his high school career on a high note.

The Zone 8 Alberta Summer Games Trials took place in Grande Prairie on Sunday, June 17.  A team of 39 athletes was selected to compete at the 2012 Games in Lethbridge from July 26 to 29.  Kit Liske, the 2010 ASG silver medalist in the Midget Boys Javelin, served notice that he will be a force to be reckoned with by winning the 100m, 200m, 300m, triple jump , and javelin events at the trials

Former Wolves runner Fiona Benson qualified for the final in the womens 1500m at the Canadian Olympic Trials in Calgary on June 28 and 29.  Benson, the youngest qualifier, finished 11th in a time of 4:35.75.  Early in June, Benson improved her personal best times in the 1500m (4:22) and the 800m (2:08) in a series of meets in the Lower Mainland.

Entry Deadline for Zone 8 ASG Track and Field Trials Approaching

2010 Zone 8 ASG Team in Peace River

Midget (97,98,and 99) and Juvenile (95,96) athletes wishing to try out for the Zone 8 Alberta Summer Games Track and Field team will hit the track on Sunday, June 10 at the Legion Field in Grande Prairie.

More Records Tumble at Zone Track Champs

A pair of local middle distance runners rewrote the Senior Mens long distance record book at the NW Zone Track and Field Championships on Tuesday and Wednesday in Peace River.

The GP Comp’s Joren Manz established new standards in winning both the 400m (50.7) and 800m (2:00.28), while Beaverlodge’s Hayden Hollowell broke the 3000m record recording a time of 9:29.  Hollowell also won the 1500m, narrowly missing the record by 4/10ths of a second, and placed 2nd to Manz in the 800m.

The Comp’s 4 x 100m Intermediate Relay Team also established a new record, stopping the watch at 46.34.  The team consisted of Marcus Cooper, James Chrenk, Chris Barone, and Dylan Dupperon.

Sexsmith athletes Kristina Koerson De Boer and Tarya Kolesch had notable performances in the Senior Girls category, both capturing three golds.  De Boer bested all competitors in the 800m, 1500m, and 3000m, while Kolesch triumphed in the 100m, 200m, and 400m.

In the team competition, Valleyview’s Hillside School won both the Jr High and Sr High titles.  Beaverlodge Regional High School was the top local school in the Sr High category, placing 4th, while Sexsmith, which also placed 4th, was the top local Jr High School.

The top two athletes in each Sr High event qualified for the ASAA High School Provincials in Edmonton on June 1 and 2.

Impressive Performances at Day 1 of NW Zone Track Championships

Two of the oldest records on the books came under assault during Day 1 of the 2012 NW Zone Track and Field Championships in Peace River on Tuesday.

The GP Comp’s Joren Manz set a new standard in the Senior Mens 400m clocking a time of 50.72, beating a 24 year old record. 

Beaverlodge’s Hayden Hollowell narrowly missed an even older record, the 33 year old standard in the Senior Mens 1500m. Hollowell clocked 4:20.34, a scant 0.44 seconds off of Brian Harms 1979 standard of 4:19.90. t

In the team competition, Hillside Jr/Sr High was comfortably ahead in the Senior High race.  in the Jr High standings, Hillside was a scant 2 points in front of Peace River’s TA Norris after Day 1.

The meet concludes tomorrow.  Top finishers in the Senior High category advance to the Provincial High School Championships on June 1 and 2.

Beaverlodge Athletes Shine at Peace Country Classic Track Meet

Hayden “Sanchez” Hollowell dominated the high school distance races

A trio of Beaverlodge Regional High School athletes were triple winners at the 2012 Peace Country Classic Track Meet on Saturday at the Legion field.

Distance runners Hayden Hollowell and Constance Issac triumphed in the the High School Gr 11/12 800m, 1500m, and 3000m races while sprinter Jordan Smith earned gold medals in the High School Gr 11/12 100m, 200m, and 400m races.

Carolyn Pilgrim   Bezanson   Open Women   Shot Put, Discus, and Javelin

Keri Alcorn    Peace High   High School Girls Gr 11/12    Long Jump, Discus, Shot Put

Levi Power-Fardy    Aspen Grove School  Hershey Boys 11/12  100m, 200m, Long Jump

Moiyan Toure  Convenant Athletics  High School Girls Gr 11/12   Shot Put, Discus, Javelin

In the team competition, the Tumbler Ridge Kodiaks came out on top.  Avondale School was second, slightly ahead of Valleyview’s Harry Gray School which was third.
