Hollowell Repeats as DHT Press Run Champion

Wolves Athletics Club runner Hayden Hollowell defended his DHT Press Run 10 km title on Saturday.  Hollowell bolted out to an early lead and never looked back, stopping the clock in 35:05, 12 seconds better than his winning time in 2013. Peace River’s Ken Wurst placed second, 4.5+ plus minutes behind.

Mirelle Martens also topped the podium in her first-ever road race.  The 18 year old St Joe’s student won the women’s 10 km event, and placed 4th overall, in a time of 41:11.  Wolves team mate Kirsten Manz placed third among the 10 km women.

In the women’s half marathon event, it was a Wolves Alumni sweep as Heather Tangen (2005), Kayla Hardy (2011-13), and Stephanie Murphy (2012) went 1-2-3.  Grande Prairie’s Darin Hunter won the men’s half marathon.

Wolves Women Win at 2014 Brian Harms Road Race

Past, present, and future Wolves women runners dominated the 2014 Brian Harms Road Race at South Bear Creek Park on Sunday.

Wolves alum Jackie Benning won the 5 km event outright in a time 21:19.  Maddy Clough, another alum, placed second amongst the women in 22:59.

The women’s 8 km event winner was current Wolves runner Jamie Wigmore, who covered the course in 32:06.  Sixteen year old Kailey Bratland, a Wolves Athletics Club runner, was second in 36:06.

Another member of the 2014 Wolves, Kayla Hardy, placed first among the women in the 16 km event (75:24), thirty seconds better than Wolves alum, Jessica Elliot.

The overall winner of the 16 km race was Grande Prairie’s Landon Dunbar.  Robert Seitz was first across the line in the 8 km event.

Provincial High Jump Record Falls at Peace Country Classic/Hershey Meet

Wolves Athletics Club jumper Nicole Van Der Kaaden established a new W 40-44 provincial high jump record Saturday at the 2014 Peace Country Classic/Hershey Meet at the Legion Track.  Van Der Kaaden leaped 1.30m, improving the old mark by 5 cm.

A total of 168 athletes of all ages took part in the meet.  The top team was Holy Family School from Grimshaw.  Harry Gray Elementary from Valleyview placed second, and Bezanson School was third.

Triple individual events winners included:

Alexi Watson – Alexander Forbes – Girls 15/16 200m, 400m, and Long Jump

Piper Chillog – St Kateri – Girls 13/14 100m, 200m, and long jump

Keane Russell – Ridgevalley School – Boys 7/8 100m, 400m, Ball Throw

Cianna Forseille – St Joes – Girls 15/16 Shot Put, Javelin, Discus

Caleb Gale – Tumbler Ridge – Boys 17/18 100m, 200m, 110m Hurdles

Jesse Gunderson – Beaverlodge High School – Boys 17/18 400, 1500, Javelin

April Road Race Update

imageWolves athletes took part in two major running events spanning the continent in the latter part of April.

On April 21, Vaughn Marillier and Kayla Hardy toed the line at 118th Boston Marathon. Marillier clocked a time of 3:25:35, good for 7958th place, while Hardy ran 3:40:22, which placed her 12527th.

The following Sunday in Victoria, BC, a group of 8 Wolves athletes contested Canada’s third largest 10 km run, the Times Colonist 10 km. Hayden Hollowell had the top local result placing 16th out of  8400+ finishers in a time of 34:05. Jamie Wigmore was 18th among the women; her time was 40:09.

Spring Track Meets on tap in Grande Prairie

SanchezProvsThe Wolves Athletics Club will being hosting three track meets in Grande Prairie in May and June.

The annual Peace Country Classic/Grande Prairie Hershey Meet goes Saturday, May 10, while the NW Zone AB Summer Games Trials is slated for Saturday, May 24.  On June 21, the GP Mini Meet hits the track.

The accolades continued on Thursday night for Wolves top two runners. At the 44th Annual Festival of Gold at the Pomeroy Hotel and Conference Centre, Hayden Hollowell was honoured as the 2013-14 GPRC Male Athlete of the Year. Jamie Wigmore, along with volleyball player Tonya Dueck, was named co-winner of the GPRC Female Athlete of the Year.

This is only the second time that two x-country runners in the same year have been named as the year’s best Wolves athletes. ACAC gold medalist Fred Setterington and basketball/xc standout Steph Ruch received AOY honours in 1999.

In addition to the winning the top prize, Hollowell, Wigmore and a number of other Wolves runners received awards:

Triple Gold for Martens at Arctic Winter Games

Mirelle Martens traded the spikes for snowshoes and scooped three gold medals at the 2014 Arctic Winter Games in Fairbanks, AK

Wolves Athletics Club runner and multi sport athlete Mirelle Martens dominated the Junior Women’s snowshoe events at the 2014 Arctic Winter Games in Fairbanks, Alaska last week.

The 18 year old St Joes student won the 5 km, 7.5 km and Short Distance Combined events.  Martens also ran a leg on Team Alberta North’s mixed 4 x 400m relay which finished in fourth place finish.

Wigmore 4th in Invitational 800m

Wolves runner Jamie Wigmore concluded her indoor season on Saturday with a 4th place finish in the Isaak Kornelson Invitational 800m in Edmonton on Saturday. Her time of 2:18.38 was a personal best and Wolves school record.

The race was won by the University of Victoria’s Nicole Soderberg in 2:14. Brad Bickley from the University of Calgary won the men’s section.

Wigmore Dominates ACAC Indoor Track Champs

Jamie Wigmore – 3 golds and a bronze at ACAC Indoors

Wolves runner Jamie Wigmore literally ran over the competition at the inaugural ACAC Indoor Track and Field Championships in Edmonton. The second-year athlete amassed three gold medals and a bronze in the two-day meet.

On Friday, Wigmore used a strong kick to pull off a pair of come-from-behind victories in the 1500m (4:47) and 400m (63.81). Both times were personal best and Wolves school records. On Saturday, she won the 800m in convincing fashion, posting a time of 2:21, 4 seconds better than runner up and reigning CCAA xcountry champion Lesley Koopman from Mac Ewan. Later on, Wigmore also combined with Wolves teammates Amanda Patteson, Kayla Hardy, and Emily Whalen to win the bronze in the 4 x 400m relay (4:40, new Wolves school record.)

Wigmore finished the indoor season unbeaten against ACAC competition winning a total of 5 individual races in three different meets. For her efforts, she was named the winner of the ACAC Indoor Track Grand Prix.

Collectively the Wolves women placed third in the ACAC Championship team standings behind MacEwan University and Lethbridge College.

Wigmore wasn’t the only Wolves runner to record a victory at the ACAC meet. Hayden Hollowell upset pre-race favourite Solomon Ngetich from Lethbridge College in the men’s 1500m. Hollowell pulled away in the final 300m to record a time of 4:13, 3 seconds clear of Ngetich. In the 3000m, Ngetich and teammate Edwin Kaitney, turned the tables on Hollowell, placing 1 and 2. Hollowell claimed the bronze in a time of 9:13.

The Wolves men placed 4th in the team standings behind Lethbridge College, SAIT, and Concordia University College respectively.

Elsewhere on the weekend, Wolves alum Fiona Benson, now running for Trinity Western University, scored the biggest victory of her career, capturing the 1000m at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Championships hosted at the University of Alberta. Benson also placed 10th in the 1500m and ran a leg on TWU’s 5th place 4 x 800 team.

Three golds for Wolves Tracksters at Indoor Provs

Wins by Hayden Hollowell, Brittany Duvall, and Nicole VanDerKaaden highlighted a number of podium performances by Wolves Athletics Club athletes at the Athletics Alberta Provincial Indoor Track and Field Championships in Edmonton on the weekend.

Hollowell accelerated away from the rest of the field in the final 100m to win the Senior Men’s 1500m in a personal best time of 4:08. Duvall also recorded a personal best time (11:35) in winning the gold medal in the Youth Girls 3000m. VabDerKaaden, competing in her first meet as a Masters competitor, won the Women’s 35-49 High Jump.

Silver medal performances were registered by Jamie Wigmore (Senior Women’s 1500m – 4:52), Mirelle Martens (Junior Women’s 3000m – 10:51), and Greg Student (Midget Boys Triple Jump).

Wigmore recorded the lone bronze medal for WAC athletes, finishing 3rd in the Senior Women’s 800m in a time of 2:20.

Hollowell, Wigmore, and the rest of the GPRC Wolves Varsity track team will wrap up the indoor track and filed season next weekend when they contest the ACAC Indoor Championships at the Edmonton Garrison.
