2012 PCC/GP Hershey Meet Results now posted

Yet another happy PCC winner celebrating her huge accomplishment with a Bill Wave

211 athletes of all ages and abilities contested the 2012 Peace Country Classic/ Grande Prairie Hershey Meet at Legion Field on Saturday.

Under sunny yet windy conditions, the Tumbler Ridge Kodiaks were the top team, scoring more than 1000 points.  Grande Prairie’s Avondale School edged out Valleyview’s Harry Gray Elementary for second place.

Entry Deadline for Hershey Meet/Peace Country Classic is Tuesday

The deadline to enter the 2012 Peace Country Classic/Hershey Meet is Tuesday, May 8 at noon.  Entry forms and information are posted on the Wolves Athletics website at https://wolvesac.com/local-eventsmeets/peace-country-classicgrande-prairie-hershey-meet/

Over 150 athletes of all ages and abilities are expected for the meet.  Action gets underway at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 12 at the Legion Track.

Wolves tackle Canada’s Second Largest 10km race

A baker’s dozen of Wolves and former Wolves competed in the Times Colonist 10 km race in Victoria on Sunday, April 29.  With almost 13,000 registrants, the TC 10 km is the second largest 10 km race in Canada.

As expected, Fiona Benson was the first local across the finish line clocking a time of 36:41, good for 10th place overall among all women and first in the F 1-19 age group.  (She was quicker than the winner of the M 1-19 group.)

Peace Country Classic Selected for Track and Field Day in Canada

For the second year in a row, The Peace Country Classic/Grande Prairie Hershey Meet on May 12 has been chosen as one of the three sites in Canada for  the 2012 Hershey’s Track and Field Games Day.

Grande Prairie, along with meets in Surrey, BC and Saskatoon, SK, will receive an event kit and t-shirts from Hershey.  In addition, each site will be entered into a draw for a $1000 grant to be used to purchase track and field equipment.  Grande Prairie won the draw in 2011 and has recently purchased some meet software and the high jump equipment with the funds.

Entry information for this year’s PCC/Hershey Meet is now posted at www.wolvesac.com.  The deadline is Tuesday, May 8.

Wolves Dominate FSJ Spring Run Off

GPRC Wolves women runners swept the top three places in the Spring Run Off 10 km in Fort St John on Sunday.

Amanda Patteson, in her first ever 10 km race, posted a time of 43:35 to best all female runners.  Patteson placed 5th overall.  Team mates Jackie Benning and Kayla Hardy placed second and third respectively.

In the mens race, Wolves varsity runner Devin Woodland made a bold move at the 6 km point dropping Wolves Athletics Club runner Hayden Hollowell.  Woodland crossed the line first in 37:26, 45 seconds better than Hollowell.  Ft St John’s Irwin Tang placed 3rd, one place better than Wolves coach Bill Corcoran.

The Wolves are in action again at the end of the month in Victoria, BC when they will contest the Times Colonist 10 km race.

Benson Third at CIS Nationals

Former Wolves runner Fiona Benson ran to the bronze medal in the womens 1500m at the CIS (Canadian University) Indoor Track and Field Championships in Winnipeg on Saturday.

Benson, running for Trinity Western University, clocked a time of 4:29.35, a scant 0.11 seconds behind the silver medalist Katie Anderson from McMaster University.  Tamara Jewitt from the Univeristy of Toronto won the race in 4:25.97.

Benson went into the race ranked #4 in the 1500m among female runners in the CIS.  Two weeks ago, she won the 1500m at the Canada West Championships in Saskatoon.  She also placed second in the 1000m at the same meet.

Wolves Third at ACAC Indoors

Strong performances in the relay events, 400m, and 3000m propelled the Wolves to a third place finish at the 2011 ACAC Indoor Track Championship in Edmonton on  the weekend.  The Wolves finished with 62 points, 10 points behind second place SAIT.  MacEwan University won easily with 133 points.

The highlight of the meet for the Wolves was a new school record in the womens  4 x 400 relay.  The quartet of Lena Farrow, Chassity Mohan, Amanda Patteson, and Kayla Hardy clocked a time of 4:46.69 in finishing second to MacEwan University.  This represented a 9 second improvement over the old record.

Other top womens performances included  Lena Farrow’s 4th (70.53) in the 400m and Patteson’s 5th place in the 1500m (5:31.96)

Eric Martinek was the top Wolves performer for the men.  He had two podium placings in personal best timese including 2nd (9:44.36) in the 3000m and a 3rd (4:28.49) in the 1500m.  Martinek, along with Duncan Farrow, Torlief Landsgaard, and Bjorn Carlstad, also placed 3rd (3:57.32) in the the mens 4 x 400m.

Duncan Farrow (55.39) and Landsgaard (56.18) placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in the 400m.

With the indoor track season complete, the Wolves now set their sights on a few spring road races.  The team next races on April 1 over 10 kms in Fort St John.

Meet Records Abound at Rick Scott Open Indoor Track Meet

Wolves athletes set a total four meet records at the first annual Rick Scott Open Indoor Track Meet at the Multiplex on Saturday.

Eric Martinek led the way in the mens 800m, stopping the clock at 2:16.2.  Amanda Patteson ran a personal best time of 2:37.5 to take the womens 800.

The mens 300m was a closely contested affair, with Torlief Landsgaard (41.0) edging out Duncan Farrow (41.4) for the win. Christie Shepherd (55.0) had the quickest womens 300m time.

Benson wins in Winnipeg

Former Wolves athlete Fiona Benson, now running for Trinity Western University, notched a huge win in Winnipeg on Saturday.  Benson captured the womens 1500m in a time of 4:31.30, knocking 2o seconds off her personal best time in the distance.

So far this indoor season, Benson has recorded the 4th fastest 1500m and 7th fastest 3000m in the CIS.

Peace Country Classic Track Meet Wins $1000 Grant
